While we always lead from a preventive care-first approach and try to preserve the natural teeth as much as possible, there are some situations where tooth extraction is the only course of action.

Tooth extraction can be a daunting thought for many patients. Still, we don’t take it lightly here at The Cathedral Close Dental Practice and only recommend it when necessary.

Luckily, thanks to our caring and compassionate approach, alongside cutting-edge techniques, tooth extraction is nothing to be worried about and will always be carried out in complete comfort for the patient.

FAQs

Why do I need a tooth extraction?

  • Advanced decay that has left the tooth or teeth irreparably damaged.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth.
  • Infected wisdom teeth.
  • Infection due to a weakened immune system.
  • Overcrowding of the mouth.
  • A loose tooth that can’t be repaired or restored.

What happens during a tooth extraction?

The treatment process for a tooth extraction will differ depending on whether you receive a simple or surgical tooth extraction. Simple tooth extractions are carried out under local anaesthetic and involve the gentle removal of the tooth from its socket, usually with a pair of forceps.

Surgical extractions usually take place with a general anaesthetic and are a longer and more complex treatment. Surgical extractions are carried out on teeth that are broken or buried beneath the gum line, such as with an impacted wisdom tooth.

Some practices refer patients out-of-practice for surgical extractions. Still, our highly qualified team of specialists is able to perform complex extractions right here at The Cathedral Close Dental Practice.

Will it be painful?

There’s no need to worry about pain when it comes to tooth extractions, as they will always be carried out under anaesthetic. Patients will experience some pain after the treatment when the anaesthetic begins to wear off, but this can be treated with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
