Now offering an opportunity to relax during treatment!

What is intravenous (IV) sedation?

Intravenous sedation involves the injection of a sedative into a patient’s arm or hand. This method is designed to relax patients during dental procedures, making the experience more comfortable and manageable.

What are the benefits of sedation?

  • Stress and anxiety relief: Sedation can help patients cope with stress and anxiety during dental treatments, allowing for a more pleasant experience.
  • Comfort for all patients: Even those who are not particularly anxious may choose sedation for procedures such as extractions, implant placements, and bone grafting, enhancing their overall comfort.

What are the risks?

While intravenous sedation is generally safe, there are some risks to be aware of:

  • Breathing concerns: IV sedation can slow a patient’s breathing, which requires close monitoring. In some cases, additional oxygen may be provided through a mask.
  • Bruising at injection site: Patients might experience slight bruising where the sedative was injected, but this is typically temporary and should resolve within a few days.
  • Thorough discussion of risks: All risks associated with sedation will be discussed in detail during your consultation with your dentist and sedationist to ensure that you are fully informed.

Preparation and aftercare

  • Arranging transportation: Patients undergoing sedation must arrange for a responsible adult to accompany them home after the procedure and to stay with them for the evening.
  • Post-procedure monitoring: After the procedure, patients should remain at the dental office until the sedationist determines it is safe for them to leave.
  • No driving: Under no circumstances should a patient drive themselves home after receiving intravenous sedation.

By offering these sedation options, we aim to provide a stress-free and comfortable experience during your dental procedures. Please talk to your dentist today to find out if intravenous sedation is the right choice for you!
